Brunei, officially known as Brunei Darussalam, is a small yet wealthy country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by Malaysia and has a coastline along the South China Sea. Brunei’s history is marked by ancient sovereignty, colonial encounters, and its status as a significant oil and gas producer.
Early History and the Bruneian Empire
The origins of Brunei can be traced back to the 7th century, with early records indicating it was a subject or trading partner of the powerful Srivijaya empire. By the 14th and 15th centuries, Brunei had emerged as a significant independent Islamic sultanate under Sultan Muhammad Shah. Its influence expanded across Borneo and to the Philippines, partly due to its strategic location for trade.
European Colonial Encounters
